International Students - Cover Letters
A well-written cover letter is an important partner to your resume for an internship or job application in the US. It is your opportunity to show that you are an ideal candidate for the position by expanding on select experiences on your resume, making connections to the position, showing passion and interest in the position, career field and company, and demonstrating your clear and concise written communication skills.
How to Write a Cover Letter
The Resume and Letter Writing section includes helpful resources to help you in the cover letter writing process:
- The resume and letter writing section of the Job & Internship Guide (JIG) provides helpful hints, a guide of what information to include in each paragraph, and sample letters.
- See what employers have to say about cover letters in this short video, Cover Letter Dos and Don’ts
Similar to a resume, every cover letter you submit should be free of spelling or grammatical errors. In addition to having a Career Counselor review your cover letter, make sure to seek writing support from your friends, classmates and your support network at Cal who are native speakers of English. Signing up for an English language conversation partner through programs like the YWCA’s English-in-Action program is another option; your conversation partner may be able to help with English grammar.
