Optometry School Preparation - Experience

It is important you have an understanding of the field of optometry through experiences you have gained through student groups, volunteering or work experience.

Admissions committees expect you to have researched the optometry profession and know some of the issues optometrists currently face. Additionally, the admissions committee will want to know specifically why you are pursuing a career in the optometry profession.

  1. Conduct an informational interview, shadow or observe an optometrist.
    1. Apply for an Externship with a Cal Alumn through the Career Center’s Externship program.
    2. Search for optometrist through Optometry related Professional Organizations such as the American Optometric Association (AOA).
    3. Become involved in Foresight, Cal's Pre-Optometry Club.
  2. Find healthcare related internship & volunteer opportunities:
    1. Health & Medicine Volunteer Opportunities
    2. Tang Center
    3. Foresight
  3. Look for a summer job as an Optometric Assistant or Medical Assistant in a local optometrist's office:
    1. Health & Medicine Job Opportunities
    2. Foresight

Getting exposure to the optometry profession can make you a competitive applicant and help you begin to identify what skills, values and interests you enjoy in this profession.
