There are many ways to do policy work. Advocacy organizations, labor unions and lobbyists work to influence and change policy. Think tanks conduct research and analysis on policy issues. Politicians are the policy-makers with legislative support agencies from all employment sectors doing policy analysis. Public administrators implement policy. Most policy and research organizations are looking for a combination of the following skills in an intern:

Career Fields that may be of particular interest are Government, Law & Public Policy, and Nonprofit & Public Service. Join the Career Center's Law & Public Policy CareerMail List to receive periodic alerts regarding selected internship deadlines and related programs. Washington DC offers many summer opportunities in public policy, research and advocacy. Although some deadlines are in the Fall, there are many organizations accepting resumes on a continual basis for summer. Do a routine keyword search "Washington DC" or "District of Columbia" to uncover these opportunities. Career Fairs - Plan to attend the various fairs sponsored by the Career Center: Nonprofit/Public Service Career Fair, Internship & Summer Job Fair, Just in Time Job Fair, and the general fairs held the first week of each semester. Employer contact information is posted including whether the employer is recruiting for internships/summer employment. Cal Student OrganizationsBelow is a sampling of UC Berkeley student groups that engage in activities related to this field. Working with student groups can be a great way to gain hands on experience as well as to learn more about the campus community and beyond.
Professional AssociationsBelow are various professional associations relevant to this field. Because these associations exist to attract and support people interested in entering the field, they can be a great resource for finding out more about the field, networking, and sometimes even getting an internship.
