See a Counselor

Career Center counselors are available for 15 or 45-minute one-to-one appointments.
You can see a counselor at any time of the year
regardless of your class standing. There is no charge to currently enrolled
students. Some students meet with a counselor once to get specific information,
for example, to learn how to find an internship or to get help with their
resume. Others may check in at different times during their life at Cal.
Sometimes it may be helpful to have weekly sessions for a period of time
to work through situations and important decisions or to devise a plan
of action.
Whether you are feeling confused about how to get started with your internship
or career search or know exactly which career or graduate program to pursue,
feel free to make use of the counseling resources available to you at
the Career Center, 2111 Bancroft Way.
Real World
Dear Counselor,
It was great talking with you today and thanks for helping
me prepare for my interview. It's nice to know that on a campus
as large as Cal, you can still find someone to personalize
the process. I'm sure I'll see you again soon.

Counseling by Major, Career or Graduate School Interest
See the list of majors and
areas of specialty which includes contact information for counselors.
Feel free to contact a counselor anytime by email with questions or
if you are unsure of where to start with Career Center services. You
can also use this list to locate the counselor you would like to see
in an appointment.
Mini-Appointments
If you are unable to invest in a 45-minute appointment right now, try
a Mini-Appointment (usually 15 minutes) with a Career Center counselor to get advice
about resources to help you with your situation, review your resume, or alert you to an upcoming
event you will not want to miss.
Make a 45-Minute Appointment to See a Counselor
For an appointment with a specific counselor, call (510) 642-1716 ext.6 or stop by the Career Center's
reception desk. Counselors initially see students according to major.
But if you have particular career interests outside of your major let
the front desk know and you will be scheduled with the career counselor
who has the most experience advising students in that career field.
If applying to graduate or professional school is foremost in your mind,
ask to see a graduate or professional school counselor.
What Happens in a Counseling Appointment?
An appointment with a Career Center counselor is 45 minutes long. Appointments
are an opportunity to:
- Discuss career options of interest and employers who offer jobs in
those fields
- Identify your interests and strengths or interpret the results of
career assessment instruments
- Understand and utilize successful job search strategies
- Find resources to research graduate and professional school programs
- Review your resume and cover letter, work on interviewing skills
and other job search skills
- Develop a personal plan of action for the job search or graduate
school application process
Preparing for a Counseling Appointment
- Be on time or call (510) 642-1716 ext.6 to cancel.
- Bring a resume if you have one.
- Think about what you want to get from the session.
- No chance to think about your appointment ahead of time? It is fine
to just show up. The time you take in thinking aloud with a counselor
will result in new ideas to implement.
Peer Advisors
Peer Advisors are full-time students
at UC Berkeley who are also part-time employees of the Career Center.
They offer you the opportunity to speak to an individual who has been
extensively trained about the services of the Career Center, but who
is also experiencing some of the academic and social issues with which
many Cal students struggle.
Contact the Peer Advisors.
Reality Check
Life after Cal isn't organized by 15-week semesters or schedules
of midterms and final exams. It can be disorienting to move
out of the role of student and into the 'real world.' Career
Center counselors have seen many students make the transition
successfully. It's worth seeing a counselor, even if you aren't
sure exactly what you want to talk about.
Take Action
- Have you been thinking about careers or jobs or graduate school but
are unsure about what to do?
- Do you have a clear plan of action but want to make sure you are
aware of all the resources necessary to make that plan happen?
Whatever your situation is, it is completely unique. It is worth investing
the time to talk with a Career Center counselor. Look at your schedule
for the next week or two. Add a Career Center counseling
appointment to your plans.
