Specialized Career Center Services

  • Events - The Career Center offers many programs including workshops, panels and career fairs that are useful for students interested in careers in the nonprofit and public service sector. Search our Calendar for upcoming events.
  • CareerMail - Join the Nonprofit mailing list for up-to-date resource, event, job and career information. You may also join the Education, Government, Health Careers, Environment, Law & Pubilc Policy lists.
  • Career Counseling - You may wish to make an appointment to see a career counselor to discuss career planning, internships, and/or the job search process.
  • @cal Career Network - Can be used to connect with Cal alumni who are in your career field of interest, whether you are exploring career options or seeking advice about your job search.
  • Vault Employer & Industry Guides - Downloadable employer and industry guides for Cal students and alumni.
  • Information Lab - The Information Lab has a reference collection of print materials on careers in the Nonprofit & Public Service sector. You may also be interested in the Career Exploration, Internship, Job Search and Graduate School sections of our library.
  • Grad School Information - The graduate school section of the Career Center website provides information and tips, including links to resources on graduate schools in many fields.
  • CalJobs - Check CalJobs regularly for nonprofit or government listings. Read the Tips for Searching and search broadly. Use keywords for specific career fields that interest you. Remember, your job search should go beyond simply responding to job listings. See Strategies.

Information specifically for UC Berkeley students

  • Cal Corps Public Service Center at UC Berkeley provides volunteer placement center, Volunteer Experience for Credit/Service Learning and AmeriCorps.
  • Cal in Sacramento - Summer internships in Sacramento, working in State Assembly and Senate offices, executive offices, state agencies, public interest groups, and lobbying organizations.
  • Cal in the Capital (DC) - Summer internships in Washinton, DC (October deadline)
  • College of Natural Resources Student Resource Center, 260 Mulford Hall, has a rich array of environmental links, local, national, international organizations and job & internship sites.
  • Goldman School of Public Policy Links links to employer and career resources websites.
  • Haas School of Business - Nonprofit and Public Management Program
  • Service Learning On Campus integrates community service activities into the academic curriculum. Approximately 40 classes (varies each semester) are available in different departments.
  • UC Berkeley Washington Program - Spend a semester (Fall or Spring) in Washington, DC pursuing full-time coursework and an internship in your selected field.

Short-term Experience for New Graduates

  • Center for Community Change, Leadership Directory. Link young people to existing training, fellowship and employment opportunities at many different organizations and campaigns.
  • Fellowships/Internships for Grad Students. List of major organizations that offer annual fellowships and internships for graduate students, compiled by Career Center staff.
  • Nonprofit Career Center. See "Fellowships in Public Service" and "One-Year Service Opportunities in the US."
  • Examples include:
    • AmeriCorps - This government-affiliated service program includes the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and AmeriCorps*NCCC programs. For more information on AmeriCorps*VISTA, visit the Friends of VISTA website.
    • City Year - A national service program that unites young adults, ages 17 to 24, from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds for a year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic engagement.
    • Green Corps' Environmental Leadership Training Program - A paid, 13-month, full-time, field school for environmental organizing and activism. The program features classroom, field work, and career placement components.
    • Peace Corps - A US government organization of men and women who live in another country for two years, working at the grass-roots level to help solve some of the most important challenges facing the developing world.
    • Teach for America - The national corps of recent college graduates, of all academic majors, who commit two years to teach in under-resourced urban and rural public schools with the overall aim of eliminating educational inequity.

  • Foundations & Grantmakers Directory. A directory of Corporate, Private, and Community Foundations, aiding non-profit charities in their search for funds.
  • Generation Change Leadership Directory. This directory lists internships, fellowships, training opportunities, and service programs for students, people interested in social justice and community organizing, and mid- and upper-level organizers.
  • GuideStar. A database of information on more than 650,000 nonprofit organizations. .
  • Idealist, a project of Action Without Borders, contains over 35,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 165 countries, which you can search or browse by name, location or mission.
  • IGC Internet. Gateway for people who want quick access to alternative news and political analysis, or an easy way to search for information and web sites of progressive organizations.
  • InterAction. Coalition of over 150 nonprofit organizations working world wide and leading advocate for humanitarian assistance. Includes links to member organizations.
  • National Council of Nonprofit Associations (NCNA) - NCNA is a network of state and regional nonprofit associations serving over 22,000 members in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
