Specialized Career Center Services

  • Events - - The Career Center offers many programs including workshops, panels and career fairs that are useful for students interested environmental careers and related fields. Search our Calendar for upcoming events. Environmental nonprofit and government agencies attend the Nonprofit/Public Service Career Fair in early February.
  • CareerMail - join the "Env Careers & Nat Res" mailing list for up-to-date resource, event, job and career information.
  • Career Counseling - You may wish to make an appointment to see a career counselor to discuss career planning, internships, and/or the job search process.
  • @cal Career Network - Can be used to connect with Cal alumni who are in your career field of interest, whether you are exploring career options or seeking advice about your job search.
  • Vault Employer & Industry Guides - Downloadable employer and industry guides for Cal students and alumni.
  • Information Lab - The Information Lab has a reference collection of print materials on the fields of environmental careers - look for resources such as "The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century" and the "World Directory of Environmental Organizations" in our indexes or in the Environmental section. You may also be interested in the Career Exploration, Internship, Job Search and Graduate School sections of our library.
  • Grad School Information - The graduate school section of the Career Center website provides information and tips, including links to resources on graduate schools in the Arts, Communication and Humanities.

Student Organizations & Professional Association Information

Participating in associations can be a valuable avenue for learning about an occupation or field. Associations are an excellent resource for networking, and their websites often have information about careers.

  • Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education - Environmental outdoor education conferences, jobs and resources.
  • Association of Environmental Professionals San Francisco Bay - Active local professional group which welcomes students to their monthly meetings. For information about monthly meetings, call (415) 487-6424.
  • California Association of Environmental Professionals - Links to chapters located statewide. Includes a directory of members.
  • WEN, the Women's Environmental Network - Nonprofit organization that links over 520 women in the Bay Area and Northern California who support and work for protection of the environment. To receive their weekly email newsletter, send your name and email address to sdief@aol.com.

Bay Area Progressive Directory - A directory of about 1000 nonprofit and activist organizations in the counties surrounding the San Francisco Bay, plus additional links to other progressive sites.

California Coastal Commission's Marine, Coastal and Watershed Resource Directory - Educational programs, volunteer opportunities and internship possibilities.

Center for Conservation Biology Network - Links to career resources, research experiences, student job listing database.

College of Natural Resources' Student Resource Center - Center has environmental job bulletins, internship listings, computer lab with helpful links to local, national, government & international organizations. 260 Mulford Hall.

Cyburbia - Comprehensive directory of sustainable development resources.

Environmental Council - UC Berkeley faculty and staff involved with environmental issues; includes their research interests. List of environmental classes offered by a wide range of departments on campus

Environmental Design Library - Job Hunting in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture. A selectively annotated guide to help job seekers in the professions of city & regional planning, architecture, and landscape architecture.

Environmental Research Foundation - National database of organizations working on environmental and health issues

GIS Center (the Geographic Information Science Center) - The mission of the center is to raise the level of GIS expertise on the entire campus and to stimulate cross disciplinary education, research, and cooperation using these technologies.

GreenBiz - Comprehensive resource center on business and the environment.

National Environmental Directory - A directory of more than 13,000 organizations concerned with environmental issues and environmental education.

Organization of Biological Field Stations - Information on 200 field stations with some job and internship information.

Ubiquity Environmental Careers Page - Environmental Job Description Page details job titles, requirements, duties and other relevant and helpful information for 22 environmental career fields.

Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies - Site has information and links for environmental resources, employers, professionals associations and listservs.

Examples of Employers That Hire Entry Level Environmentalists

"You can work green...and earn green. Environmental jobs are in demand, and with so many different types of jobs, there's one for almost anyone interested in having Mother Earth for a boss."

That's the message from US Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman who used the first Earth Day of the new millennium to shine a spotlight on environmental jobs.

The employers below periodically hire entry-level professionals. They are not necessarily hiring at this time. Check their websites for current hiring needs.

California Air Resources Board - Regulatory agency. Continually hiring Air Pollution Specialists, Environmental Engineers, Staff Service Analysts.

California Department of Fish and Game - Description of jobs, and links to seasonal employment (not all seasonal jobs are posted, so contact regional & field offices directly).

California Environmental Protection Agencies - Links to all CA EPA agency employment pages.

California Public Utilities Commission - Regulates energy and water suppliers. Periodically hires Regulatory Analysts I's.

California State Parks - Periodic hiring for State Park Ranger Cadet. After completion of 6 months training, advance to State Park Ranger. Anticipating numerous retirements in the near future.

Environ Corporation - National scientific and technical consulting firm that provides chemical risk assessment, environmental risk management and engineering services. Recruits in the environmental, engineering and health science (toxicology and life science) areas.

Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) - National, non-profit organization. Provides paid, full-time professional internships for recent graduates.

Environmental Protection Agency Region 9, San Francisco - Federal agency that protects public health and the environment. Hires environmental scientists, environmental protection specialists, environmental engineers, community relations specialists, life scientists, toxicologists, and chemists.

Jones & Stokes - Employee-owned environmental consulting firm hires scientific, economic analysis, business communications, and administrative staff.

National Wildlife Federation - Resource Conservation Internships (paid, 6 month) Work on a wide range of cutting-edge national policy initiatives with NWF lawyers, lobbyists, and grassroots organizers. 9/15 deadline for January internships and 3/15 for July internships.

Tetra Tech, San Francisco - National environmental consulting firm. Hires entry-level environmental specialists, planners and engineers.

US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region - Contact each forest directly for seasonal work, or check the USDA Forest Service's nationwide automated temporary employment site.
