Smart Students

Admission to Berkeley is highly competitive. For Fall 2006, about 24% of the 41,750 freshmen applicants and 29% of the 10,644 transfer student applicants were admitted to Cal. Admitted freshmen had a median uncapped high school GPA of 4.3 while transfer students had a median transfer GPA of 3.72.

Students at Berkeley come from nearly every county in California, all other 49 states, and more than 100 foreign countries. About 90% of undergraduates are California residents with over 46% of the incoming freshmen and 33% of the transfer students coming from Southern California. Additionally, Cal’s student population reflects the ethnic diversity of the State of California.
