Internship/Study Abroad Programs

Emerging Leaders Program provides summer Internships and leadership development opportunities for students with disabilities.

ENTRY POINT! - A program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) offering summer internships for students with disabilities in science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

internships.berkeley.edu - The Career Center's website for general internship resources that are available to you.

Microsoft-AAPD Federal Information Technology (IT) Internship Program

Mobility International (MIUSA) - Provides international exchange opportunities for students with disabilities.

National Service Inclusion Project - A training and technical assistance project to increase the participation of people with disabilities in national service.

Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) - Along with a consortium of Federal agencies and private sector employers, ODEP coordinates the Federal Work Force Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) which is designed to assist students with disabilities to gain employment with Federal agencies. Recruiter will be on campus mid to late February of each year.

Summer Congressional Internship For College Students With Disabilities

Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, Scholarship Program for College Students with Disabilities

World Institute on Disability - Offers 3-month summer internships in public policy research and training. Application deadline is mid-March. Email wid@wid.org for more information.

Employment Agencies

Bender Consulting Services - Provides employment opportunities in technology for people with disabilities.

Lift, Inc. - Nonprofit organization that works with major corporations to recruit, train, and place information technology consultants who have disabilities.

National Organization on Disability's Links to National and Local Job Assistance and Recruitment Agencies.

Project HIRED - Private not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to assist individuals with disabilities to secure jobs appropriate to their qualifications and career goals. It also has a temporary staffing division.

TransAccess, Inc. - Prepares individuals with disabilities for jobs in Information Technology and identifies jobs in San Francisco Bay Area businesses. Access to mentors and job shadowing opportunities are also available through this agency.

Disability-Friendly Employers

Annual Job Fair for People with Disabilities, sponsored by the San Francisco Mayor's Committee for Employment of Persons with Disabilities, is held in October. For details about the Fall 2004 Fair, sign up for CareerMail's Students with Disabilities & Cal Transitions mailing list.

California Business Leadership Network (CABLN) - An active alliance of California companies who are collaborating to improve employment for people with disabilities. View their SF Area membership list. CABLN also maintains an Online Recruiting Service and invites UC Berkeley students to submit their profiles.

Career Fairs sponsored by the Career Center - Many employers attending these fairs are actively recruiting students with disabilities. Sign up for CareerMail to keep informed.

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) - Consulting service that provides links to disability-related employment resources.

Job Links - List of employers who have indicated interest in recruiting and hiring qualified individuals with disabilities. Maintained by the Office of Disability Employment Policy.

National Business & Disability Council - Maintains a resume database which is made available to companies that have demonstrated a commitment to hiring people with disabilities. The employer membership list is available on their website.

Work-Study Students with Disabilities or Chronic Illness

Are you concerned that it may be difficult to keep your Work-Study Award and keep up with your studies?

There may be a way you can:

  • Take advantage of this work opportunity to build your resume
  • Find disability-friendly work-study employers to work for
  • Work only 5-10 hours a week if you need to
  • Learn about the Student Income Exemption Program and keep your SSI benefits while working

Recruitment Programs

Federal Employment of People with Disabilities - Information about the Schedule A excepted service hiring authority, Selective Placement Program Coordinators who help agency management recruit, hire and accommodate people with disabilities at that agency, and more.

Limited Examination and Appointment Program (LEAP) - A State of California program that consists of a Readiness Evaluation for certain job classifications to establish a referral list of names for departments to use in hiring. If you are hired, you will be appointed first on a temporary basis for a job evaluation. If you successfully perform the duties of the job, you will be appointed to the regular civil service classification.
