Career Destinations of the Class of 2001

Underrepresented Students

The Survey
The Career Center at the University of California Berkeley conducts an annual survey of the initial postgraduate activities of its baccalaureate graduates. All 6076 degree recipients graduating in December 2001, May 2002 and August 2002 were surveyed, starting with our web-based survey in fall 2001. Those who did not respond, or whose post-graduate plans were uncertain, were mailed questionnaires in December 2002. The overall response rate for the campus was 40.9% (2487 students). This report presents highlights of the endeavors undertaken by underrepresented students, (self-identified African-American, Chicano/Latino and American Indian) in each undergraduate school and college. Of the 849 students in this group, 225 students (26.5%) responded to our survey, significantly less than the response received from the population at large.
Profile of Underrepresented Students
Graph Most underrepresented students in the class of 2001 chose employment after graduation - 64.4 percent either were employed full time or were still searching six months after graduation.  This compares to the rates for the campus as a whole, and only a slightly larger percentage of minority students were seeking employment.  Only 16.7 percent of this group matriculated to graduate school, which is about 20% less than the general population.  The remaining students were engaged in other endeavors such as self-employment (2.2%), part-time employment (4.9%), internship and volunteer experiences (5.3% - nearly 1½ times more than the overall population), taking a year off (2.2%) or other pursuits (4.0%).
