of Advertising

What does a position in advertising have to
do with Integrative Biology, Practice of Art and Sports Management?
Some people have multiple academic interests - ultimately, it
is the ability
to transfer skills into a new context that serves them well in
their careers.
In a brief interview, Cal alum Tamara Tripp (BA, Integrative
Biology and Practice of Art) lets us know about her current career in
advertising.
Career Center (CC): What is your current position?
Tamara Tripp (TT): Senior Account Executive for
Carol
H. Williams Advertising.
CC: What are your main job responsibilities?
TT: Managing two accounts including production of TV,
radio, outdoor and print ads as well as budget management. I work
directly with the clients to assist them in planning their marketing
and advertising.
CC: What experiences/training were important in getting you
to where you are in your career?
TT: My master's degree in Sports Management has been very
helpful even though it's not in this field. I was able to do projects
where the learning was applicable. My previous career in sports
management transferred well into advertising. Business is business
- so my understanding of budgets and finance, planning organization
all applied to this field.
CC: What do you like about your work?
TT: It's always busy and never boring. I am challenged
almost every day to solve problems, think outside of the box and
come up with new ideas.
CC: What are some drawbacks?
TT: You work a lot of hours and travel a good amount.
CC: Do you have any tips regarding what Cal undergraduates
can do to prepare for a career in the field?
TT: Take marketing classes. Intern in any business field.
Just be involved in business outside of the classroom.
